We have a new Member...

Whelp folks... I know there are hundreds of listeners a month to the AA Radio Station. Which is why it was set up. But I've always hoped that an AA Group would grow up around the broadcast. A group of people who all worked on participating in the broadcast and making it even better. Well... sometimes quickly, sometimes slowly, it is now happening.

AA Radio Meeting welcomes another trusted servant: Lynn.

Lynn is creating a Yahoo Group that will allow people to submit their Mp3s directly to that group. Lynn knows more about the Yahoo Groups thing than I do. I think I nominated her Yahoo Groups Outreach Captain and MP3 Facilitator, something cool like that. We're a new group and we can make up titles for our service positions.

Lynn will also be posting here I hope.

Glad so many people are listening and very grateful that Lynn is now helping.

This is an opening meeting of Alcoholics Anonymous and participation is encouraged.

Lots of news and new tapes...

Well... this summer was not the greatest for Live365 and there were times when all the speaker files in the AA Radio account were erased along with the files from many other broadcasters.

When things seemed to have been settled at Live365, they just weren't working and so getting new files back up into the rotation was difficult.

But now... everything seems to be working just great and the AA Radio Meeting is humming along nicely.

Lots of new files and new stories of recovery. Some sage advice from our own Big Book. Lots to listen to.

So all of the audio files for the AA Radio station were lost when Live365 had some "hardware problems." Wanna hear something funny? I remember when that kind of thing would have really upset me. Today because of sobriety I know I can simply just replace the files and move forward.

And what's more I can even use this as an opportunity to increase the amount of tapes that can be stored in the Live365 account. I changed the bitrate of the audio from 32 to sixteen and can put over twice as many speaker tapes into the account now. And that's what happening right this moment.

I don't yet know how many tapes will be able to go up but I'm assuming somewhere around fifteen or twenty different speaker tapes will be in the playlist. Enjoy.

Also -- remember that you can always send me an audio contribution of your AA story and I will gladly place it in the playlist!

Three New Tapes Added Today...

So... three tapes added today. Which means I had to pull three tapes. Hope you heard them. We'll have six full tapes in rotation plus A Turkey In Flames -- which will stay in the rotation until someone formally demands it's removal! Or I find something else that makes me laugh as hard!

Also -- we've had 544 hours of listening in the last 30 days! That's very cool. I remember when we passed three hundred in 30 days and I had the math skills to think, "Wow -- ten hours of listening per day." I'd have to break out a calculator to figure out 544. Whatever it is, it's nice to know the message is being carried!

Total Listening Hours Have Surpassed the 1000 mark!

I just received the following email from Live365. It tells us that we have broadcast 1000 hours of AA recovery into people's lives. I think that's cool. And that's 1000 hours of actual listening. They don't count hours unless someone has tuned into the stream. As a matter of fact, I don't think the stream, streams unless someone is listening. (In this way, they have answered that question about the tree falling in the forest... if no one is listening to the station... it does not make a sound.) Anyway, please read their message to us:

Five New Tapes Uploaded

Five new tapes have been placed in the rotation but that of course means I had to bump about as many. Bill W. History of the AA Bigbook was one of my favorites from the last set.

Has anyone heard the Turkey In Flames piece? It's a treat if you happen to be listening when it plays. It's straight AA Program but it's also very funny. I'm looking around for other treats like that. If anyone knows of any, let me know.

Approaching AA Radio 24 listening hours per day!

I am please to announce that we are consistently getting about twelve hours of listening per day! At our user level, the stats are difficult to piece together but we have listeners listening to the AA Radio Meeting about half the whole day long... which is pretty cool. When I checked just now there were two people listening simultaneously -- we have the ability for 25 people to listen simultaneously -- it will be cool to see if we ever reach that many people at once!

Anyway, thanks for your involvement in the AA Radio Meeting.

I am incredibly grateful to be sober today!

And about getting mp3s of AA speakers for your iPods: www.XA-SPEAKERS.org has taken care of all that for us. And happily for free -- the way this message must always come! I was as enthusiastic about XA Speakers when I found out about it as Jeff is about the AA Radio Meeting. I mailed the XA Speaker folks a shoebox with 30 of my favorite AA Tapes! (And they are in Iceland.) I really support what they are doing over there and most of the tapes streaming at the AA Radio Meeting come from them.

I am happy to report that I have received an e-mail from a listener who says she has some tapes that she may be sending for our listening pleasure -- and I'm hoping she will include her own share. It would be nice to hear some regular speakers in the mix with all these polished "event" speakers. So please -- contact me about getting your share streaming in with the others. And Jeff -- send your tapes, too.

And about getting more speakers into the stream, I can try to lower the quality. We have 8 tapes up now, which maxes us out. If I drop down to the next quality level I may be able to get 12. And I suppose if people contributed we could expand the account to accomodate more but it feels really early for that. Perhaps when there is more participation from a more stable and active group of AAs it would be appropriate to discuss it then.

And there is a very brief and fun share just added from a friend of mine who was a great help to me when I came into the program. It's only about three minutes long but it's hysterical! Enjoy.

I've just updated the playlist at the AA Radio Meeting again so that another great speaker is available for us to listen to.

The way that the play list changes is that I swap out the tape that's been in there the longest for a new one every couple of days or so.

I'd love to be able to insert some shorter talks from you all sharing your experience, strength & hope. If you can manage it, please send me an mp3 of you sharing on any AA topic and I'll pop it in the line up.

If you're a "Newcomer" -- someone whose just beginning to learn about AA and thinks it might be right for you, please open your phone book and call your local "hotline" or "intergroup office." The best place to make a beginning with AA, and recovery from alcoholism, is at the meetings.

I know... I know... it's principles not personalities... just thought I would let you know that Chuck C. and his New Pair Of Glasses will be showing up in the mix. I also have a few talks from Bill W. ready to put into circulation so look forward to those sometime.

I must say that word from Live 365 continues to be very good. We get about two new "presets" every day! Live 365 does not exactly keep those stats but I know because they send an email every time it happens and I get about two of those a day.

How gratifying to learn that not only are people listening but they select the station as a preset probably because they plan to listen again.

I am usually in service in my home groups and with Intergroup or General Service but I have rotated out of just about all the local service commitments (I live in a REALLY rural area) and so I invented this as a way of staying in service to this program and it is wonderful to know that it's reaching some people.

If you happen to be reading this, leave a "comment" and let me know how you found the Live 365 Radio Meeting or the Blog. I'm hoping that people can start using the comments here to discuss their reactions to the tapes playing. We could turn the station and this blog into something much more interactive.

This thing should be as open as possible to input and so it is important that you folks know what's happening... assuming there are a couple of you folks out there.

So good news is that there are SEVEN TAPES in rotation. Three Men and Four Women. I figure what I'll do is just swap out the two oldest on a reasonably regular basis or whenever anyone asks me to do it in the comments area of this blog.

The bad news is that we have used up all hundred megs in our account. There isn't room for another tape.

Now, here's a question that you all could chime in on: by reducing the sound quality of the tapes just a little bit, I could get TWICE as many tapes into the rotation.

Please leave a comment regarding this if you have already listened to all seven tapes and care strongly one way or the other.

Also, if you ever hear a tape that you love so much you want to save it into your iPod -- please download it at www.xa-speakers.org. That's where I get all of these tapes.

I put another tape up in the line-up. I had a great night listening to the Steve dude, he's a riot. I also toggled this button that will mix up the lineup after each tape, let me know if you don't like that and I can reset it back to play them in some order.

I hope to get a couple more up tomorrow.

New Tape Added To The Others For A Total Of Three...

My name's Chris and I'm an alcoholic. And I suppose, like a lot of alcoholics, a bit grandiose. I thought this AA Radio Meeting would be a lot more interactive than it actually is. I figured people would be sending me audio of themselves and we could actually get a set of tapes that would sort of approximate an actual face to face meeting.

That hasn't happened. But a few people are listening. Dozens have keyed the station into their presets and TWO whole people have made it their "favorite station." I apologize that I didn't update the speakers for a while and I didn't mind the gentle reminder from my friend. And actually, I would love to see more involvement if we can figure out how to share responsibility for this thing. I believe I started it in October -- paid for the full year in advance -- I consider that my dollars in the basket at a meeting, because I do not feel "ownership" of the thing. It exists because I didn't see a single Live365 station streaming AA audio and I thought it might be useful for new AA's, people curious, and AA's too lazy to put their own tape on. I just let the station play sometimes and I am pleased that the choice of a tape is made for me.

So, call me crazy, but I think it would be cool if my service on this thing will last for one year and then, in the spirit of rotation, someone else will pick it up and do it for a year.

That would be the simplest plan.

But I am totally open to whatever ideas you might have. Lets use the comments in this blog to discuss this.

I'm grateful to be sober today and grateful for AA.

I just have to say that I am delighted that so many people are making the AA Radio Group of Alcoholics Anonymous a preset in their Live 365 accounts. I hope the meeting is carrying the message of AA.

Meeting Welcome

Where I got sober we called this document the "Meeting Format" some areas call it the "Meeting Welcome" -- I am posting this here because an AA meeting is not a one guy operation and I want everything about this meeting to be shared among all the members... just like a regular AA Meeting.

This gets read or played before a speaker on AA Radio.

Welcome to this meeting of the Radio Group of Alcoholics Anonymous.
My name is _____ and I’m an alcoholic.

Let’s start this meeting with the serenity prayer followed by a moment of silence for the still suffering alcoholic.

God grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change
The Courage to change the things I can
And the Wisdom to know the difference.

Alcoholics Anonymous is a fellowship of men and women who share their experience, strength and hope with each other that they may solve their common problem and help others to recover from alcoholism. The only requirement for membership is a desire to stop drinking. There are no dues or fees for A.A. membership; we are self-supporting through our own contributions. A.A. is not allied with any sect, denomination, politics, organization or institution; does not wish to engage in any controversy; neither endorses nor opposes any causes. Our primary purpose is to stay sober and help other alcoholics to achieve sobriety.

Why it works: 12 Traditions, inside the back cover of The Grapevine.

Business: This meeting of the Radio Group of Alcoholics Anonymous encourages participation from recovering alcoholics, newcomers and AA groups all over the world.
